India's First Center of Excellence in Medical Devices
Varanasi: The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi is set to establish the country’s first Center of Excellence (CoE) in Medical Devices, bringing together the production of medical devices and equipment under one roof. This pioneering initiative will primarily focus on E-mobility and biomedical devices.
IIT BHU Director, Professor Amit Patra, shared that the Institute of Medical Sciences is collaborating to ensure the project’s success. The initiative marks a significant leap for IIT BHU, which has already made strides in areas like electronic chip design.

Professor Patra highlighted that after thoroughly evaluating the university’s strengths and areas for improvement, the decision was made to launch this groundbreaking medical project. The project will benefit from the support of investors who have committed to providing financial backing.
The CoE will involve collaboration among the Pharmaceutical Department, Biochemical Engineering Department, and Medical Department to develop these cutting-edge devices. The project outline is currently being finalized, with implementation expected soon.
Additionally, the faculty strength is set to increase significantly, with plans to recruit 100 new faculty members this year as part of a larger effort to expand to 900 faculty members over the next three years. Professor Patra expressed excitement about the initiative, noting that no similar center exists in India dedicated solely to the production of medical devices.
