Indian MedTech Gains US Edge as Trump Cuts Costs and Shifts Supply Chains
With Donald Trump back in the White House, his administration is expected to reshape Indian MedTech and pharmaceutical ties with the United States. Known for his business-oriented leadership style, Trump is anticipated to emphasize cost-reduction strategies.
Recently, the US raised tariffs on certain Chinese medical devices to 50%, and experts predict Trump will maintain these higher tariffs. This situation creates an opportunity for Indian MedTech manufacturers to step in, as American buyers and even Chinese exporters look to diversify supply chains. Rajiv Nath, Forum Coordinator of the Association of Indian Manufacturers of Medical Devices (AiMeD), highlighted this opportunity, suggesting it could open new doors for Indian MedTech manufacturers.

Trump has previously emphasized his strong ties with India, and with a more stable international political climate, Nath believes the timing is ideal for Indian MedTech. This aligns with recent Indian government initiatives to bolster domestic medical device production.
According to consulting firm PwC, Trump is likely to maintain a focus on deregulation and on policies that enhance healthcare access while cutting costs. A recent report, “President-elect Donald Trump’s Healthcare Agenda: Deregulation, Flexibility and Choice, Accessibility and National Security,” outlines expected shifts in the US healthcare sector. The report points out that while Trump’s first term was marked by attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), these efforts no longer have the same political traction. Instead, Trump now appears to focus on refining the existing system, taking credit for preserving the ACA.
This nuanced approach may signal a trend towards technical adjustments in healthcare, rather than large-scale reforms, which could affect international healthcare and MedTech dynamics, including opportunities for Indian MedTech manufacturers in the US market.
