WHO Launches MeDevIS Platform
The World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced MeDevIS (Medical Devices Information System), a new online platform aimed at improving global access to medical technologies and devices.
MeDevIS is heralded as the world’s first open-access clearing house for comprehensive information on medical devices, supporting informed decision-making by governments, regulators, and users regarding device selection, procurement, and utilization for disease diagnostics, testing, and treatment.
Looking For a Medical Device Regulatory Consultant?
Featuring 2,301 types of medical devices, MeDevIS covers a broad spectrum of health issues, including reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health, noncommunicable diseases like cancer and cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and infectious diseases such as Covid-19.
According to Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products, the increasing complexity of medical technologies poses challenges for healthcare providers and patients navigating their use. MeDevIS aims to consolidate international information into a single accessible resource, particularly beneficial in resource-limited settings to facilitate decisions on life-saving medical technologies and improve access.
Seeking Expert Regulatory Consulting Services for Medical Devices?
MeDevIS allows users to search for specific medical devices, providing details such as device type, recommended healthcare system level, device scope, required infrastructure, and other relevant categories. It replaces traditional paper-based literature searches across multiple publications, aiming to standardize device naming using the European Medical Device Nomenclature (EMDN) and Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) systems. These systems include universally applicable codes and definitions, aiding regulatory approval, procurement, supply, inventory management, tracking, and pricing in healthcare settings.
The launch of MeDevIS marks WHO’s inaugural global repository for medical devices, leveraging its expertise from the Priority Medical Devices List (MDL). The platform will expand with additional technologies and devices across various healthcare domains through ongoing engagement with stakeholders and partners.
Recently, WHO collaborated with ASEAN partners at a regional meeting to enhance diagnostic testing accessibility, underscoring its commitment to global health advancement.
